Interview with a graduate student, T.C.

Mr T.C. is a year 12 student who just graduated from his high school and will be doing his HSC in the coming weeks.

1. What’s the biggest difference you’ve noticed between your old regional school and your new private school in the city?

The biggest difference is the scale of resources—everything from facilities to subject choices feels broader and more specialised here.

2. Do you feel like you get more opportunities here than you did back home?

Yes, the city school opens doors to programs, competitions, and networks that simply weren’t accessible regionally.

3. How did the internet and technology you had back home compare to what you have now?

Back home, slower internet and older devices were normal, but here technology feels like an integrated tool rather than a limitation.

4. Were there subjects or activities in the city that weren’t available in your regional school?

Absolutely—things like advanced science labs, debating, and certain arts programs were never options regionally.

5. How did living and studying in a regional area affect your mental health compared to now?

Regional life was quieter and less pressured, but moving here gave me more support systems and opportunities to grow.

6. Do you miss the sense of community from your old school, or do you feel more supported here?

I miss the tight-knit, everyone-knows-everyone feeling, but here the support is more structured and professional.

7. Do you think moving gave you better chances for uni or jobs?

Yes—being here makes pathways to uni and careers feel more direct and realistic.

8. What advice would you give other regional students thinking about moving for school?

Don’t underestimate how challenging the transition can be, but remember that the opportunities and growth often outweigh the discomfort.
